Professional workshops

Dear Data’s drawn data-postcard format is now used as part of teaching curriculums from primary school to university and beyond to help students learn to collect and present data.

This response inspired me to create a range of professional data visualisation workshops for practioners looking for something different than the usual tech-centred approach.

My workshops increase data design skills in practitioners of all backgrounds using nothing more than basic drawing materials. The content is friendly, accessible, tool-agnostic and suitable for developers to designers, data visualisation professionals to newcomers, and graphic facilitators to marketers.

I love teaching the principles of data visualisation and information design across a wide range of audiences, from children to community groups, university students to professionals – even while speaking onstage! – so if you are looking for a workshop for your team or event, get in touch.

Professional workshops

I've taught these workshops at conferences and institutions including Guardian Masterclasses, the Victoria & Albert Museum, and Visualized : London (all UK), Eyeo Festival (US), art+bits festival (PL), Visualizing Knowledge (FI), The Conference (SE), and Graphic Hunters (NL).

Examples of workshops include:

  • Data Drawing Class:
creating new languages for visualising data

    1 day

An intermediate-level workshop that uses traditional methods and materials from the world of art and design as an inspirational starting point for creating custom data-driven visual systems.

  • Data sketching workshop
    half-day

An intermediate-level workshop where participants undertake a series of timed drawing exercises using only black charcoal, applying techniques found in traditional drawing classes to data visualisation. By the end of this workshop, participants learn how how to sketch and iterate quickly offscreen when creating custom data visualisation designs (even if they move onto computer / into code at a later point)

  • Data Visualisation for Design Teams
    1 day

A workshop specially created for design teams who want to better understand the data visualisation design process, workflow, and best practices in order to work with data within their own client projects, helping them move beyond the bar chart and expand how they work with and visualise data.

Data pros, be better designers. Designers, dive into data. Bring your data to life using innovative visualisation techniques in this one-day workshop unlike any other, and learn from world leaders that come from two sides of data visualisation: data science and design.

University workshops and lecturing

I have given lectures about my work to students at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, the University of Oxford, University of Goldsmiths, London College of Printing, London College of Fashion, Ravensbourne College, New York University (UK Campus), Sheffield Hallam University (all UK), and Kutztown University (US).

I have also given student workshops at ITP (New York University), Kutztown University (both US), Sheffield Hallam University, London College of Fashion (both UK), Hyperisland (SE), School of Ma (DE), and Kunstuniversität Linz (AT).
